I don't plan going anywhere (age 87) so opted for the $10 renewal. If I need to go somewhere where it is required, I'll use my passport. I found it interesting that you can do on-line renewals for 12 years from the last time your photo was taken.

When I was a young man, what was then called “a national ID” was regarded as a severe infringement of our personal liberties. Social Security cards had “not to be used as a form of identification” printed on them.
I guess nobody cares about that anymore.
when someone other than my bank used to ask for my ssn, I tell them in no uncertain terms that ssn is not an identifier, it’s illegal to use it as such and they should be ashamed of themselves for asking for it and contributing to identity theft. Of course now, our SScard has some secret agent code number instead of the real number.
Did you have to show any proof of name changes that occurred between birth certificate and the current drivers license?
And if all they had for documentation was church baptism and marriage, then they’re s.o.l.
Happened to my mother in law; she never was able to get an ID, (albeit a non driving/state ID one) in the new state to which we relocated her.
I had to schmooze anyone that wanted ID, such as the bank manager (” ok now, where is she going to deposit her social security check? how is she going to write a check to pay the landlord?”. They accepted her old ID from the other state).

No originally the Real ID was supposed to be in effect by like 2005.
I think there should be a rule. Any law that hasn’t gone into effect by the time half the people who voted for it died should just be thrown out. I don’t know if Real ID is there yet, but if you’re a better, take the over.

I think the problem is making sure all the Trannies have time to alter their Birth Certificates to show they were actually Born the opposite Sex.
It takes time for an alternate reality to become the only reality, the exception being Presidential Elections of course.

And, in this state at least, even when you show up with all the paper work, they insist on changing your name to first name, middle name and current last name. When you ask that the middle name on your new “ID” be your maiden name you are told no cuz the middle name is on your birth certificate.
Well, so is your maiden name on your birth certificate but apparently they aren’t interested in making your name as unique as possible to avoid another Mary Ann Smith by using Mary Crownover Smith. They just repeat that your middle name is on your birth certificate.
