I’m a cyber security expert, and I am stunned they have not corrected this hacking problem by now.

As a cyber security expert, you'd know as well as I do that just because you can put something on the Internet that doesn't mean you should.

Why is all this critical infrastructure accessible via the Internet? Where's the air-gap? Why isn't all this critical infrastructure on its own managed WAN, completely independent of Internet access?

Who are the assclowns responsible for the security of the infrastructure connected to the Internet which provides access to the pipeline infrastructure controls? Are they still employed?

Why wasn't there a manual fail-over plan available to be implemented in the event of a computer based controls outage?

Finally, who's the idiot who thought making critical infrastructure accessible via Internet was a good idea? We seem to have this issue with every piece of critical infrastructure. If it's critical, why is it connected to the Internet in any way rather than a dedicated, fully manged WAN and fully managed/isolated VPN solution that allows secured & managed access with zero connectivity to the Internet?

Maybe so...

but a white hat hacker can and will put on the appearance of no benefit and not in cooperation for the benefit of the system owner.

I know some will call this stupid, but I believe it and will say it anyway. A lot can be learned from the “Anthrax” shutdown in the movie, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”.

When the results don’t match the stated cause, something else is going on.

Reminds me of the mantra of the parents of teenagers: When their story doesn’t make sense, it means they’re lying.

Because nothing is actually broken. It is a self manufactured crisis scam to get the price up. Big oil has done it before.

Thanks for the FReepsplanation. I prefer to deploy Occam's Razor. The simplest explanation is to be preferred.

In this case, the simplest explanation is that "hacking" is being allowed to happen in order to justify more spending of our tax dollars and to control our behavior even more.

No tin foil hat necessary.

More like it’s a major wakeup call for companies that won’t pay to keep their IT up to date and hire good IT personnel. Giant enterprises like Colonial rarely upgrade, requests to improve security are usually rejected, then they sit around with Shocked Pikachu Face when their Windows 2000 servers get hacked and their inadequate backup precautions render them prostrate before ransomware.

This should never have happened - modern enterprise IT standards would have made this, at worst, a nuke-and-pave restore to get basic functionality back in hours. Every exec that denied needed upgrades should be fired, and if their IT leadership wasn’t screaming for upgrades and backups, they need to go as well.

“If this had been a President Trump administration the media would be screaming “Trump’s fault” at the tops of their lungs.”

Don’t worry, they’ll be doing that within a day or so.

The FBI put a dozen plus agents into a NASCAR garage over a noose-like door pull, but can’t seem to deal with hackers disabling key national infrastructure.

The Biden Administration, understandably, figured that Americans were TOO DUMB to figure out that knocking out 45% of the gasoline supply might just cause disruptions.

The BuyDUNG Administration was smart enough to figure out that a major disruption of the gasoline supply would force the Northeast US (blue states) to be "safer at home" at Memorial Day weekend and NOT want to burn the fuel to go to the New Jersey and Delaware beaches.

We also need to hold corporate execs of companies providing vital supplies responsible for being too cheap in IT.

“We need death penalty and large bounties to put an end to hacking and ransomware attacks.”

I said that to my liberal neighbor last night. She didn’t say ONE word. Gone is the Pitbull who fervently defended us and all we have is a demented old man, run by anti-Americans who are sucking America dry, watching us suffer while they laugh and dream of how to inflict more pain on us.

I’m a cyber security expert,

Fortune 100 IT for the past 23 years. I'd question your experience if you believe there is some simple "hacking problem" to correct.

Russia and China have CITIES full of professional, government paid "hackers" that are continually attacking EVERYTHING.

Should the ransom be paid? George Washington and John Adams paid the Barbary pirates...

Who's bureaucrats?

Also, bad guys by definition aren't full of truth. What's to say this message isn't intended to throw people off their trail?

I'm not doubting your assessment. It is certainly plausible. The bigger message to me should be that everyone's "smart home" can be shut down, too....your Roomba can become a video camera for criminals. Lots to learn here.

Virtually nothing is air-gapped in our infrastructure... zilch, nada, nothing.
