A lot of diesel engines can run just fine on filtered cooking oil. The Romans made olive oil by using hot water and pressing olives. There are a lot of plants that can be used to make oils with sufficient BTU content for a diesel engine.
Even better grow a crop that is a secondary winter only crop , that not only improves the soil for the summer food crops it prevents erosion and the by products of the oil production are high protein seed meal that already has been tested and approved for beef, dairy,poultry,swine and fish feeds with an amino profile superior to soya and more similar to fish meal amino. The fodder can be used also for cattle, sheep or goats and is also high in crude proteins or it could be pelleted into biofuel for pellet stoves or cofired with coal, better would be to use any number of currently hydrolysis processes on it and yield C5 and C6 sugars from the hemi cellulose and cellulose respectively then ferment that into alcohols butanol, ethanol or propanol, or go for single cell proteins with bacterial or yeast fermentation and sell the SCP to the feed industry as complete amino proteins for animal feeds. Either way it’s an additional revenue stream for the farmers and the crop itself is drought tolerant, winter only, and needs little nitrogen based fertilizers it’s win win for the agri community.
Plus the oil is a 22 carbon bond oil oil FFA that when hydrocracked forms two jet fuel C11s or two octane C8s while C22 is already diesel chain in length.
