That is a problem, a big problem actually.
I remember at that time I had a friend who was sort of an ex-commie type. She said to me: the one that won’t fall is Romania, they are ruled with an iron first.
My jaw literally dropped when shortly after that discussion I saw the front page news (wasn’t it on Christmas day?) that Ceaușescu and the Mrs. had basically been taken out to the yard and shot dead.
And I’m afraid it’s getting bigger.

Nicolae and Elena Ceaucescu tried fleeing Romania as the entire civilian population and most of their Army were seeking them out for arrest.
They were caught and executed by firing squad for their many crimes against the Romanian people. They were tried, convicted, and shot on December 25, 1989.
It is a red-letter date as it was the end of terror for their nation.

I think it’s too late. Institutional culture is quick to corrupt but painstakingly slow to correct. Unfortunately, there’s nothing retired officers can do, flag or otherwise.
There needs to be a solid 8 to 12 years of a Republican president(s) working with Secretaries of Defense that share the view that the Marxist officers and career bureaucrats need to be identified and replaced with men & women loyal to the Constitution and the non-partisan historical nature of the US armed forces.
That is going to require a Herculean effort supported by voters.

IMHO, the US military does not have the manpower, transport/lift, logistics, etc., to oppress 300+ million Americans. And the more “woke” they go, the less combat effective they will become.
