No...it is about keeping them out of the reach of children without an adult present. Introducing kids to REAL GUNS under adult supervision and training is one of the best safety measures one can take.
Hubby had a single shot .22 rifle, it put MEAT on the table, they were to poor to afford.
He carried a 9 mm Ruger as an adult, I carry a S & W hammerless .38 SP Airweight, snubnose, But I’m only 5 ft. Tare in shoulder, messed up surigically Dominate Right hand, so the ability to pull trigger, recoil was the deciding factor.
And a gun safe when the 3.5 yr old grandaugter comes visiting. She can now open doors, so Meds get locked up too.
A better idea is to teach the children not to mess with them. From the time I could walk, I knew where the guns were in the house, I also knew not to mess with them. From time to time the adults would let me feel of them while they held them and they would take me outside and they would kneel down and put it to their shoulder and let me pull the trigger and shoot it.
See post 19. When and where I grew up, gun safe storage was simply never done. There were gun cabinets, but they were never locked. Loaded long guns were leaned against the wall behind the door to the outside. Loaded handguns were in an unlocked cabinet over the fridge. Children "fooling around" with guns just did not happen after "inoculation" at the post-toddler stage.

The NRA Eddie Eagle program is pretty good for teaching children not to mess with them, or at least used to be. They hammered home the message STOP! Don’t Touch! Tell an adult! STOP! Don’t Touch! Tell an adult! STOP! Don’t Touch! Tell an adult!
Did I mention they tell kids STOP! Don’t Touch! Tell an adult!?

When very young, son and his friend found a half-buried gray plastic 6-shooter when out playing. Looked fairly realistic. They didn’t dig it up, they came and got me.

Nor was it when I grew up they were on closet shelf. Alot of it is todays parents don’t teach their kids boundries or fear of punishment. I was smaking fingers as crawling infants when they reached for lIght sockets, graudated to butts as they tried climbing., Whaled the 10 yr old’s butt with a belt after he dribbled gas from the can on the ground where his granddad who was watching him was tilling and left it unattended to answer nature’s call, got the torch sparker from the garage,...whoom. Lucky he didn’t have more than a sore butt. Dad grew up in an abusive house and wouldn’t touch him. I gave him a licking that today gets you sent to jail for abuse, didn’t leave bruises, as I took the backlash on my leg, I knew how hard I hit. NEVER SET ANOTHER FIRE, never touched a forbidden item once he was told not to.
I’ve hipped carried since 1998. Think purse carry is dumb, only reason mine goes in my purse is I’m at the dr and you are not supposed to carry, then hire armed guards. Wrong sign up, just some piece of crap that was printed on the net, Not an Official state sign.
