Well, we always had around 3 months supply of staples as we grew up in a farming community that often had periods of electrical outages and tornadoes that could hit and sometimes did take out the entire shopping center.

And hubby’s brother operated a locker plant, so for years we always bought a quarter of beef from him for the freezer.

In 2008, we decided we needed to expand our pantry storage spaces, and given the gas prices and financial melt down, we stocked up quite a lot-anticipating price increases or shortages.

For example there was a sale on coffee at half price and we bought 3 cases—plenty was left for others—no one else was stocking up then.

Another was peanut butter. We were using about 1.25 jars per month - mostly for our grand daughter. The expiry dates were for about 18 months so we bought 18 months supply @ a buck a jar - shortly thereafter it was up to $1.79 per jar.

A couple of years later, it did go down to 1.25—not all the way down. We ordered some long term (legacy) #10 cans that are good for 30 years—we hope to never need them and let that be part of our kids inheritance. And we did began the habit of buying items - one for use and 1 or 2 for the pantry.

And I learned how to pressure can foods, so we could stock up on meats on sale, without needing electricity for the freezer.

About the only thing different we did when the images came from China was to double check our flu supplies, and go ahead and buy our anticipated Jan. and Feb. normal restocking in advance.

We were all set to survive for months without going anywhere. Then our local Walmart set up the pickup service, so we were able to get fresh milk, produce, and bread that way. I only had to bake bread a couple of weeks and then the service was activated.

We were never in danger of running out of toilet paper. Ha.

A few months into the Plandemic, we decided to build a storage shed and root cellar. And began to clear some storage shelves in the basement for additional food storage.

So the legacy food went to that additional area which we call the warehouse and we have been busy stocking it up too. We have our working pantry and the intermediate storage for about 3-6 months. Our daughter sometimes “borrows” items when she doesn’t want to drive to the store-she’s about 4 country blocks away.

Prepare for the worst and pray for the best. We continue to refine our preps.

So what happens if you just leave you phone at home?

SWEET OLD BILL :" So what happens if you just leave you phone at home? "

It means that you will miss the immediate notification of "covid contact",
but you will also miss your wife's call, your girlfriends call, and the spam calls offering millions of dollars held in a bank in Nigeria.
It also means that the various ABC agencies out of Washington and Langley won't be able to track your travel, except through transponder reports on the Interstate.
Big loss,... right ?

And even if the supply chain doesn’t go down, there’s the human factor.

What caused the shortages last year was panic buying by people who were no prepared.

IMO, for the time being, that is the biggest threat for shortages.

I came to realize a few months into this mess that this was a “Black Swan” event ... not the virus, the government overreaction/overreach.

Or they know something they don’t want to tell us. Either way we are screwed. I think it’s BS but I am often wrong.

I’m curious what items were missing from your local WalMart. There is a massive shortage and long lead times for goods out of Asia and WMT is highly dependent on Asia for supply chain. It’s mostly a shortage of containers and back-ups at the ports. Not just finished goods but intermediary goods that US companies use to assemble and process other items. At the same time however, there are labor and trade issues that have come up too. Expect at least another 5% inflation on staple items in 2022 when the suppliers reset their prices to retailers - and that will just be the sticker price, sizes may shrink too.

Some retailers use what they call “scarcity” or “in and out” type promotions. You see the item one week, and then next week you notice it is not there. Then a few weeks later you see it again and you buy it because you noticed it was sold out last time. That is just a marketing strategy not really related to actual scarcity of goods. But in this case I think it’s probably just that they are having a hard time getting goods delivered. I expect real scarcity of various intermediary bulk materials that US manufacturers need to continue at least through Q1 of 2022. Just look at the difficulty car manufacturers are having getting microchips. That’s just one tiny thing holding up delivery on a million automobiles. So imagine how all other industries are being impacted.

I’ve seen pics where there are a lot of container ships backed up on the west coast.

I’m curious what items were missing from your local WalMart.

Canned new potatoes whole or sliced, canned tamales in any size, whole foot-wide sections bare in a couple of other food aisles - don't know what was in there. In a few cases, there was only a can or two left.

Some of this I attribute to slipshod restocking but the amount of items missing was above average.

Thanks. Wife sent me to do some grocery shopping. We were having taco night so I was out looking for refried beans. I must’ve walked past them 10 times. I called the missus and said “where are the refried beans?” she said “in the beans aisle” and I said “there is an aisle for beans”?

Of course, they were in the Hispanic foods aisle. How little I know about grocery store shopping. I picked up a case of beer today, and grabbed a couple of mangos too. How can 10 mangos be less expensive than a single bottle of beer?

The world is starting to look like a weird star trek episode where we are the ‘strange planet’ due for a visit from the Enterprise.

Commies use starvation as a tactic - we have commies making decisions in our government.
