All else they’ve got to do is limit our ability to travel by personal motor vehicle and Freedom of Speech is as good as dead.

Yes, that is a primary goal of the movers and shakers that want to reset society. They hate the premise of the U.S.A. and the Constitution. Limit mobility by taking away private ownership of motor vehicles, and you take away freedom (not just of speech).

There is a second goal, and that is to reorient us away from an automobile-centric society. Vast amounts of land is dedicated to use of autos, whether by roads or by parking lots. There is a push to get us away from single-family residences into massive vertical towers, towards use of public transportation and away from ownership of private vehicles. It's happening here in California where new state laws are forcing all towns to build tall vertical residential towers and scrap single-family housing codes. There are some being built near my neighborhood, 6 to 15 story towers where formerly only 2 or 3 stories were allowed, being done despite huge neighborhood protests.

Freedoms are being lost at an accelerating pace.

This is a totally screwed up proposal.

The IRS already has mileage driven data for all commercial vehicles, (tax deduction for miles driven, fuel tax paid etc.), also for businesses with company owned vehicles, (again mileage deductions), and most self employed individuals who take mileage deductions for business purposes. What they don’t have is the average Joe’s mileage and presently there is no mechanism for them to get it.

So let’s look at the future, as Dems always plan for.

First you get a program, through statute/regulation, that says all vehicle owners must pay, let’s say 5 cents per mile, (to start with because it is not too much money for the average driver and it will help prevent climate change), and, of course that means that there will have to be some type of device installed in each vehicle on the road, (and all new manufactured vehicles), to capture the exact miles driven.

This device will have to be tamper proof, (with major criminal penalties and fines for tampering). The device will have to pass DOT/fed specification. Only a few manufacturers of the device will be approved, (all will be Dem donor companies). The cost for purchasing and installing the device will be the responsibility of the vehicle owner, but there will be a program to purchase and install the device at government expense for those vehicle owners with income under a specified level, (probably $75,000. Can’t expect the poor to pay for it, can you?).

After the first year of the program the congress will tell the public that the revenue from the mileage tax is not driving down the average miles driven, which needs to meet a certain number in order to reduce GHG. The tax will need to be increased to discourage drivers from driving so much. Also, the revenue also needs to be increased in order to pay for all the road improvements needed in the country, (blue states mostly will be getting the money. Not so much the red states).

Before long the number of miles driven will not be low enough so there will be money allocated to local police departments to start check points to determine why a driver is on the road, where they are going and to verify that the mileage device is properly working. There may even be a requirement, like the “smog test” done on vehicles in order to register a vehicle, that the vehicle owner will need to have done to verify that the device has not been tampered with. This program will also need to be done only at fed government approved/licensed facility using government approved/licensed testing equipment, (at the owners expense).

As always with any new program, it will start out as a pilot program and then grow, and grow, and grow until it is too big, with too much revenue to allow it to die.

glad I’m in the Philippines. Y’all are in for a roller coaster ride trying to stop this. It needs to nipped in the bud now. Everybody should be calling/writing their congress person and organizing against this monstrosity.

yep anything that has to be transported FOOD CLOTHES SUPPLIES. any gas or mileage tax is the worst kind of tax on working poor and ever the goverment leeches as they have to eat and wear clothes too, but because it’s not a direct tax, it’s a cost of increase due to another tax, these fools in left wing fantasyland will never “get it”. They’ll call for higher wages to off set the inflation and higher minimum wage. The communists never stop.

this will hit the moron “progressives” in the cities and their suburbs to. those who want us all backward in time, in some attempt at controlling people..I mean the environment...haha

When the cost of delivering goods and services and supplies increase due to this nonsense it hits everyone who eats, wear clothes and needs to buy...anything. That hurts people outside of rural areas too.

It’s not “liberal”.

American government is classical “liberal”. The Constitution went against 3000 years of evolved tyranny.

This crap is a RETURN to Feudalism - that’s all that Marxism EVER was

Hi.

The government has been after Uber and Lyft a long while.

Maybe this is the coup de grace.
