One can also use the lasers that are built into something the exact size as your firearm’s chamber. Using that to sight in a rifle is a huge ammo saver.

This only boresights your weapon. I use a laser that magnetically fits on the muzzle. It should put you on paper at 100 yards. If you know the range at which the bullet should first cross the line of sight of your optic or sights, boresight at that distance. Then it's time to shoot and sight in.

it is a safety precaution. I know several who won’t clean their guns in a room with ammo present. You can never be too careful.

My experience with bore-sighting has been inconsistent. If I’m shooting at a range with an earthen backstop and have a buddy with me to sight where the round hits I can usually zero in my scope or iron sights within 5 or 6 shots.
