Although there is land connecting Panama to Columbia, there is a *very* thick jungle for about 70 miles that was said to be impassable for humans. Poisonous snakes and other hazards (incredible heat and humidity) meant your chances of survival were not good. If a trench has been dug, I’m pretty sure it was done by the Columbian drug cartels trying to move there products to the Panamanian port of Colon. Even though Noriega is not around any more, the Colon cartel is still powerful.
Those leading them make a ton of money doing so...the faster they get them thru the jungle areas the more they stand to make, not just the Cartels. I understand the men generally lead them in groups of considerable size.
Frankly there’s hundreds upon hundreds waiting to go thru Panama....this isn’t going to stop any time soon. It’s organized and countries harboring these people want them out so they assist in this as well.
