Mask free at my son’s private Christian school all year, except for two weeks when there was an uptick in cases, and even then it was just on the move between classes. We choose not to participate in the fear.

You don’t sound like sheeple. You did the right thing.
But I don’t agree that the teacher unions hold all the cards, and even if they do, all a parent has to do is quit playing cards with them. As you did.
If everyone ignores them, this stops.
The infected rates were dropping. People were returning back to work, to restaurants, sporting events, and so on. There was only one issue with that--you couldn't tell who had been vaccinated and who had not.
The elites won't make that mistake again.
Voila! Enter the Delta strain. That's when breakthrough cases started happening, and in many places, they went back to masks. For ALL people, regardless of vaccine status.
Retailers and restaurants learned though, they can't force their customers to wear a mask. It's bad for business. Most now have the "mask recommended" signs posted, but that's about it.
If you're in a public place; i.e., a government building or a place with lots of government oversight--an airplane or public school, for instance--you WILL be wearing masks for a long time.
