The police union spokesman said the rules were unenforceable. They allow people to go out for work, school, the grocery store, medical care, the veterinarian, etc. So how can the police tell whether someone is on a legitimate trip?

So on the surface at least, it's not resistance in principle, but on practical grounds.

Schallenberg's government is exactly 8 days old, and only entered on the negligible support of the Greens. The protestors know this.

As if I have to make the point, Sebastian Kurz is very much alive and well and poised to make the Kurz III government once Schallenburg -- who is clearly not up to the task -- is deposed.

The problem is, with 2 days advance notice of Saturday’s protest, the people in the streets will be overpopulated with EU-imported anarchists, and the Austrian body politic will have to walk a fine line to ensure Kurz is returned.
