This is the “Civic Center” area on the edge of the Tenderloin (which has always been gross).

But much much grosser now. Used to have beautiful fountains and ponds in front of City Hall to Market Street (UN Plaza). There were elegant plantings around the fountain and stairways to the underground garage. Benches were removed because of bums. The stairways were blocked at the top by plywood because the bums crapped there and it was a hassle to clean every day. The reflecting pond was drained and filled with gravel & dirt because the bums soiled the pond. Plantings and trees removed because of bums damaging them. Paradise got paved over, for the bums. All started happening in the mid-1960s when democrats got elected to City Hall, and won't be fixed as long as they're in charge.

Yes. I’ve worked in that building since 1994. We call UN plaza “urine plaza.”

I worked nearby at City Hall while doing IT engineer work. I'll never forget seeing bums bathing in the fountain of UN Plaza at Market Street, and then seeing a homeless guy defecate into the fountain, all while a Muni bus was stopped and passengers gawked in disgust. And also seeing a bum defecate at the curb and wipe his ass with newspaper, leaving the soiled papers at the curb. While working at City Hall in the 1970s and 1980s, I was on 24/7 call for mainframe problems, sometimes having to go there at 3 a.m. while homeless were wandering around, and bang on the door for the night watchman to let me in. Scary then, but much more dangerous now and I wouldn't consider doing it nowadays.

Thanks for that report first hand from the scene. I am genuinely relieved to have a validation of what I have observed from far away

I sit 2,000 miles away and view You Tube Videos made by a reporter or two that visit various cities and make video reports of what they encounter. I don’t know if the reports are real even though I see them and sometimes rewind and look again. I want to pause for a better look or look just to the side of what is shown but can’t

Again......thanks

In one video purportedly “downtown”, in the central urban area, the streets were more or less deserted with almost no pedestrian traffic and low vehicular traffic. We visited San Francisco Wells Fargo Head Quarters back I believe in 2012 and there were lots and lots of both. The condition was vibrant.

I spoke with a curator of the Wells Fargo Museum about parking my van. He laughed at my ignorance. There is no parking, especially for a large van. He suggested hopping the train outside the city and riding in. We got on the train 30 miles out and came right where we wanted to go. We visited the Wells Fargo museum that is the end of our journey following the Butterfield Trail, the route of the Overland stage US Mail contract from Memphis to San Francisco.

One wonders about Wells Fargo and the museum being operational now.

I know that San Francisco and California have many good Freepers and conservative minded people. Please forgive me when I rant about the salvation of America depends on the destruction of California and especially of San Francisco. America is being destroyed by San Francisco values

The Wells Fargo museum is temporarily closed, but still exists. Lots of corporations have been moving their headquarters out of the SF Bay Area in the last few decades, including Wells Fargo. My daughter works at Wells Fargo Corporate HQ in Des Moines, Iowa, as a vp overseeing managers across the country. Although born in SF, she enjoys the sanity of Des Moines despite missing the vibrancy of SF. It's only a few districts in SF that are bad, but the democrat poison is spreading there.

As for the current San Francisco values, they were brought here by east coast people like Nancy Pelosi (her father and brother were mayors of Baltimore and destroyed that city). Most of the "leaders" here came from outside California and ruined our state (like Willie Brown from Texas, screwed up SF as mayor and California as state assembly speaker).
