I recall visiting SF in 1999 for an interview with Wells Fargo. When it came to talking $ I asked what kind of accommodation (signing bonus, relocation compensation, etc.) they had for folks relocating from the Midwest, because the housing cost disparity was not fully (hell, not even partially) reflected in the salary structure. The fellow who ostensibly was trying to hire me said "I don't expect everyone in my department to be able to own a home in San Francisco." That ended the interview process for me. I walked back to the hotel that was only several blocks away and the stench of urine was impossible to avoid. Hobos were sleeping in doorways, there was trash everywhere. I couldn't believe it. And those were the good old days compared to the intensity with which the problem emerged in the early 2000's.

My brother, who is seriously handicapped, had a similar situation. He was actually held prisoner by this “person” in his own home. I don’t think he actually took the guy in, I understand the guy arrived and forced himself in. He’s lucky he survived, and his “guest” was arrested.
