1) The proper name is not “Taiwan.” They are the Republic of China and the only representative government of any portion of the Chinese people, now that the Communists have neutered basic rights in Hong Kong and Macau.
2) Our defense relationship with the Republic of China goes back to 1937 and the Japanese invasion, so at least 85 years.
IIRC more like 75, but “selling” is the key word. We may have been “giving” for 30 or 40 before we started charging.

In fact, why do they have any business with them in the first place. My mom’s step dad long ago told me the commies will sell us the rope with which we will hang ourselves. Smart guy.
The problem, of course, is that our fools now have China as the sole provider of crucial trinkets.
