Did a similar thing in high school - was making rocket fuel in the back part of the Chem Lab while class was covering something else and the fuel went up. Burned the countertop and scorched the ceiling - but didn't set off the sprinklers. The room was full of choking smoke and Sister Mary Veronica yelled "Choke to death, all of you - I'll fail every one of you!"
I got a two-day suspension and had to pay for the damage out of my own pocket.
Science.

Good thing it was BYU and not State U. Or he would’ve been cooking meth rather than rocket fuel.

Interesting, is the final form a solid?
Does it burn or explode?
Somehow in my experiments with potassium nitrate, I missed this entirely

It forms a solid. It deflagrates. There are plenty of videos online for “sugar rockets”.

Sorry, didn’t read down far enough to see someone else had commented along this line. Carry on.

“Massive?”
Fireballs seem larger when you’re inside them.

Honestly, I did stupider things myself at that age, just not with explosives in the kitchen.
That said, why hasn't someone told this kid about Estes rockets? They "da bomb", and they're actually quite safe if one is into that kinda stuff.

Heh. All I ever accomplished was a small fireball and a ruined pair of almost-new trousers. Mom was not pleased.

Potassium nitrate/sugar has a higher specific impulse (more 'power') than the black powder used in Estes rockets.
Most sane people make this in a big open space (garage or outside).
