I remember when the air bags were first mandated in autos and the companies were ramping up production. There were a lot of stories about factory explosions back then. Of course some of them like Takata exploded on their own long after manufacture.

We did share many experiences with the Coalwood guys. Ducking metal was one of them.

thanks for the info, here in calif, we have to use desert land, a few clubs have nice setups, one even has engine test stands, liquid and sugar, lots of college students design and build and test.

You are correct, but by just using honey instead of sugar your final product is malleable. For rockets we never added sulfur, for smoke bombs that could clear out an entire neighborhood just mix in copious amounts of sulfur and be sure to stand down wind when you light an entire coffee can of it off.

Ahh the 70’s, even the cops kind of chuckled when they saw what we had done on a slow Friday night. “Wow, that’s almost as good as the smoke pots on our ships in the navy! Now, which house is yours, we need to speak to your parents.”

Our fire chief came to watch once. Also for several years we did a homemade fireworks show on Independence Day, setting them off on a breakwater that extended about a half mile into the bay. Never had a problem with the authorities and we cleaned up after ourselves. But then that was in the ‘60s.
