The US can’t defeat China in the Pacific unless it fully understands that Russia is our enemy.
A strengthened Russia makes for a two front war, which the US cannot win.

Back in 1904 Russia got into a scrape with Japan. All the smart money in the West was on Russia. After all, Russia was a Great Power, and one with a proud military tradition. And Japan? It was an inferior and backwards nation.
What everyone missed was that Japan was quietly modernizing while overconfident Russia was decaying. Japan won the war easily.
The United States is starting to look like Russia in that conflict, and China is starting to look like Japan.
A world war over this is no more likely than when Kosovo was being bombed on a regular basis, 1998-1999.
A rather large one, but a brushfire war none the less.
