Similarly, the “trans-” prefix was chosen because it entered the Zeitgeist in the 1990s and 2000s due to leftist media attention to “trans fats” (a misnomer: specific fatty acids are or become trans-, not whole fats), which in context are those fatty acids that are unnaturally altered due to human intervention (specifically, deep-fat frying).
So, “unicorns” are non-existent, and “transgenders” are unnatural.
