Yes but at least I am free to go private pay if I can afford it.

You do realize that the partly private health care system in the US while worse that pure free market health care is better than totally socialized universal “health care?”

And that Medicare is quite crappy? Try finding a good doctor who will accept it near you. It is accepted by hospitals but that’s because their license depends upon it. I wonder how soon we will all be paying to sexually mutilate our “trans” seniors

The other factor is debt. If your retirement income is $30K per year and three quarters of that goes out the door to service debt then you’re screwed. I suspect a lot of older folks are in that boat.

Another factor is that people were never intended to live on their social security check and many have not put away nearly enough money to supplement their social security check such that they could live comfortably in retirement.

Even with the reduced payments due to starting to collect Social Security at age 62 I live comfortably. I spend about 70% of my Social Security and save the other 30%. Gains on investments just increase my net worth and aren't spent. I could spend more, but doing that really wouldn't improve my life. I already buy whatever I need and want.

I never want to retire. I actually enjoy work...

When I was still working, I mostly enjoyed my work, but from time to time there were beautiful days when I'd go out on a smokebreak and I'd think that it would sure be nice to be spending a day like that sitting on the dock, watching the clouds and the waves and the birds. In the years since retirement 14 years ago there hasn't been a single time that I've wished I was at work instead. I think if I had gone back to work it would have been an incredible waste of a life.

While better than a lot of people get government retirement is not that great. I will still have to work even with government retirement and they force me to retire at 57.

She used that money to put her kid through decades of school.
In this case, the kid should be taking care of her now.

I don’t understand the people who believe SS is enough to live on for their retirement. Do these people not look at their cash outlay each month to see how much they spend?

I remember being told not to count on having ANY SS when I was in my 20’s. So I started putting aside retirement money when I was 25, put two boys thru school, including post graduate degrees and retired at 63 with enough income to be just fine. House is paid for, car is paid for and I love retirement. LOVE it. Spouse is still working, but he wants to work.

I never wanted to be a poor old person. I grew up in a poor household as a child and saw how hard it was to scrape by if you were dependent on gov’t money as your sole income. I did not want that to happen to me and I saved a large portion of my income (spouse did the same) and we didn’t live a “big” life w/ lots of really expensive vacations, etc.

I really don’t want to go back to work, but if I did go back, it would be some job that required no managerial role at all. I want nothing to do w/ training the idiots out there in the current labor pool. Most have zero idea of what hard work is, let alone have ethical work behaviors.

I wish I had lived differently myself.
If I had what I should have done, if I had known how to do it, I would be owning a home outright and my retirement fund would be worth about $6 million CDN.

Definitely part of this is being driven by people’s stupidity.

Retired at 58, start SSI in 2 months.

We live on a sailboat in south Florida. City has a free bus, and, several rental car places if we need one. Otherwise, we’re having a good time, stuff to do so we aren’t bored, lots of good food and other boaters to chat with and visit.

Hoping to be able to hit the Bahamas soon....then who knows.

Well, someone has to prop up their Government Universal Health Care System. Might as well be the old people who are getting denied hip replacements and chemo.

aint that the truth, add in the younger generation doesnt want to work let alone pass a drug test for a decent job that they would pay decent income taxes on.

too many people living pay check to pay check because they dont want to work any place that's too worky or do a job that's too jobby.

p.S. I personally know a guy whos 34 , married and making 80-90 grand a year managing 3 micro brewerys/ bars. Working 40- 50 hours a week. being management he gets other perks too, like not tending bar , off sundays and mondays, if its slow he leaves, etc. He is dead Serious complaining he wants " his weekends off and to be home at 5 everyday no overtime, no covering for someone who calls in sick or quits friday night". 80 grand a year and he'd prefer to work some dead end job making 30-40k. Because he wants to do weekend and night stuff. Smh...34 going on 16.

Who knew, i could just quit and get a job where I only worked 40 hours a week, no drug tests, support a wife and kids? Who knew?

Ill thank my parents asap for never buying me whatever i wanted but let me work nights at age 14 washing dishes at a local mexican restaurant for 2 bucks an hour. Walking home at 2:30 am with my best bud who got me the job. They never came and got me. It was a 2 mile walk!!

How about instead of telling me I have to keep paying for social security for even longer and kicking the can down the road even further - we just get rid of it.

I mean, I get it was great people before I was born thought I'd enjoy paying for their retirement, and so they voted themselves to it, but I don't enjoy it. I'll likely never see it.....get rid of it.

Your county Republican Party could use you. Volunteer, be a delegate, run voter registration or election integrity or precinct captains.

Your church could use you. Teach Sunday school, organize evangelism events, organize charity work.

Your needy neighbors could use you. Someone who can’t mow, someone who needs after care for their kid so they can work, someone who could use help cooking or cleaning due to infirmity.

Kids can use you. Teach Eddie Eagle for the NRA. take scouts or trail life kids to the gun range. Contact the local homeschool group and offer to have a day of learning to fish, or run an annual spelling or geography or Bible bee, lead a choir or a theater group, start a Math tutor program or a science club or a programming weekly learners group.

My FRiend there is so much good work you can do. Don’t you dare be bored.

I retired in 2020 at 68 when my position was eliminated due to covid. I understand your boredom. I’m now happily unretired and piddling 40 hours a week in a sleep lab DME department. Best job I’ve ever had. I may actually work 6 hours a week, but paid for 40 with benefits.

> but oh, well, I’ve seen pics & videos.

It’s about the same as seeing it. I always figured that if there were some place I really wanted to see, I’d move there for an extended time to get the full experience. Any trips taken beforehand would be recon.

Yeah, good luck with that. She majored in Sustainability. Former college GF married the guy she dated before me if that tells you anything. He should have called me first.

I am successful because I dated her but I am happy because we are not together.
