But here’s the skinny: President is mostly a ceremonious position in Israel, sort of like the English monarchy, only it’s not hereditary. Herzog is doing was Presidents do in Israel, which is giving out and receiving silly-assed medals and awards, whenever he isn’t approving or vetoing governing coalitions, his only real function.
It’s embarrassing, really. But it does mean something to Joe Biden, who has to face an angry electorate for the mid-terms, including such core constituency of his party as Jewish voters. Another thing to bear in mind, is that Israel is tiny, poor and surviving against all odds in a sea of enemies, and America is huge, powerful and wealthy, and can make life real difficult for Israel, and life is already hard enough here as it is.
