paintballs will break the skin and cause you to bleed a little, and certainly leave noticeable bruises, but beyond that they do no harm (except to the eyes)
it hurts like hell to get shot by one but its not permanently damaging. Chances are, you could drive off all these idiots without causing real harm.

I knew a German fellow who spoke pretty good English, but his version of that phrase was “Nip it in the butt!” Not exactly the same but amusing.
Portland doesn’t have an endless supply of rioters.
It is the same 100 people who have nothing better to do with their lives — hoping to make the “ultimate sacrifice” to make their lives meaningful. It is the same with Seattle. It’s just that their elected representatives can’t figure it out. That is the case for detaining and disciplining such people — rather than releasing them to multiply their crimes.
It’s the same with the homeless situation: if you push them somewhere else, you haven’t solved the homeless problem. Some people need supervision and direction — and not simply more freedom to do whatever turns them on.
One reason is that it is a job with wages. They get paid sometimes by the hour, sometimes by the job plus they et to keep some of the booty from the looted stores.

I suspect the genesis of this kind of parenting goes back to the social revolution of the 60’ and 70’s. SNCC, Weather Underground, hippies, “God is Dead” movement, and all the others form the basis of what we see today. I’m in my 90’s now and was in LE for a while then. I remember well!
