It is “against their nature” because hundreds of generations of bears were selected, so those who feared people survived much better than those who did not.

They do have noisemakers, pistols hat have blanks in them, that park rangers use to frighten off bears in parks that seem to,be pretty effective, but I think they also, use rubber bul,etc too to dissuade some of,the tougher cases, if i recall right.

Another important fact: There is a surplus of black bears in Canada.

About 20,000 have to be killed each year to keep the population of bears stable.

They are harvested in every Canadian province.

The number of "bold" bears which would be killed to keep people safe, would be a few dozen a year.

Yet the Canadian government pushes the propaganda that it is horrible to kill a bear.

I have been to this park. We did run across a ranger that had a 12 gauge and just a few slugs. Just a few. He looked like one of those Mexican bandits who don’t need badges.

Outdoors/Rural/wildlife/hunting/hiking/backpacking/National Parks/animals list please FR mail me to be on or off . And ping me is you see articles of interest.

There can be similar problems in the US too. Illegal discharge for example. And the bears distance. Better to survive and let the lawyers sort it out.

Come on! Everyone knows according to woke logic, you only shoot after you’ve been killed.

Park rangers have been carrying guns "for their safety" since 2009.

Apparently The Lords have a value to their lives that exceeds that value of the lives of the peasants. That's why park rangers can carry guns "for their safety", but the peasants can not.

The bear was closing in on the food contained in the hikers pack

exactly ... there's always a lot of details that aren't reported, and you have to figure them out

humans aren't bears' natural food, 99% of the time they will avoid you ... UNLESS you provoke them with strong-smelling food, trying to get too close to get that perfect picture*, etc.

this guy could have worn some kind of metallic noisemaker ("bear bell") and the bear would have run away long befoire any encounter ... what a waste

(* I've actually seen tourists try to get within 30 feet of a grizzly, just so they could get a good photo ... one swipe of that giant paw and they would have been torn to shreds on the spot)

The powers that be hate mankind.

Except themselves, because, you know, they are the special elite class.

"Bear bells" are unlikely to have helped in this encounter.

The bear knew the hiker was there.

The bear chose to close the distance, already close.

The hiker likely eliminated a "problem bear".

The legal problem is the hiker was not one of the government "experts" who was legally allowed to eliminate problem bears.

Yes, I have heard all the excuses bear advocates make for problem bears.

According to bear advocates, it is always the human's fault.

Canada has lots of surplus bears.

Culling the few bears which are problems will not make a dent in the number which must be killed every year.

The bear chose to close the distance

and why was that? animals will go out of their way to avoid another unknown animal

this guy didn't sound too smart, he was clueless about the Park rules about guns, I'm guessing he probably was also so clueless he had some hamburgers in his backpack, yet went into the wild backcountry where everyone knows bears, mountain lions, and other wild animals live ... stupidity reaps its own rewards

and yes, bear bells work

Canadians are not allowed carry guns in Canadian national parks.

I think that rule applies in many domestic parks. I have to think Hochel has made it illegal in NY parks. The legislation, quickly signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul, forbids concealed carry permit holders from bringing their weapons into parks. The public roads within the Adirondack Park are part of the park territory.Jul 8, 2022

and yes, bear bells work

They only work on bears which wish to avoid humans.

This bear did not wish to avoid the human.

Humans are made of meat.

Bears which become conditioned to human food should be killed.

It has become a slogan: A fed bear is a dead bear.

He should have used his bear spray and shouted disparaging remarks at the bear before shooting.

"..A person called Jasper Dispatch to report their friend had shot a black bear with a 20-gauge shotgun on the Overlander Trail, about seven kilometres east of the trailhead, according to an email from Parks Canada.."

Mebbe not the first, but definitely a mistake.

These humans are morons..

This has been going on for years in Canadian Provincial Parks. Conservation Officers usually aren’t notified until someones seriously hurt or killed. In this case, they wouldn’t have any idea which bear is/was a threat if no one was hurt.
