The very idea of an appointed board of politicians and members of various special interest groups setting wage rates for a business--never mind where these workers are employed or what kind of work they do--is not a new idea.

The Soviets routinely underpaid conscripted workers and at the same time overpaid party functionaries to buy their loyalty.

"I don't make much, but then I don't do much."

That phrase might have been appropriate after the Bolsheviks seized power and began corralling Russians into work camps where the idea of "equity" meant everyone suffered equally.

Even that was an illusion, as everyone is different. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, skills and disabilities, none of which would translate easily to a certain dollar amount expressing our "worth" in any given job.

When the government mandates wages, some will be paid what they are worth. Others will not.

Chances are those who are overpaid will stay. It's a gravy train.

Would you invest in a company whose profitability depends on the make-up of a politically-appointed board whose members have no stake in the company?

Probably most fast food workers in major metro ares of Californication make close to that anyway.

Insanity.

When there should be no such thing as “min wage” at all.

Get rid of MW as it is a fascist regulation, forcing people to do something they don’t want to, and it likely fuels much of the illegal alien problem.

It's just a word game now...(food categories, etc)
It's a lobbyists game, to buy off the pols to exempt your food group.

I now live 16 minutes from Rome, WI, , home of the bank that helped finance the 20th Century Motor Co.

Somewhere in the area is the inspiration for Starnesville, located in Adams County, the 2nd poorest county in Wisconsin.

I often wonder what propelled Rand to choose this area? Back then, the flat terrain was heavily forested. The soil is sandy/acid and farming is limited. Irrigation is common for row crops. There are several wonderful lakes in the area, the largest of which, Petenwell, was the result of a dam on the Wisconsin River. It was created in 1948, during the time she was writing the novel.

Now it’s a tourist area featuring hunting, fishing, and boating, due to Petenwell and the other small, narrow slit lakes in the area, and the flat to gently rolling topography is perfect for golf courses. At the time of Rand’s writing, this portion of Central Wisconsin was dominated by the timber/lumber industry.

Perhaps she visited as a tourist and spent time writing here? It is peaceful & quiet still today, even during peak tourist season like this weekend. She did have a friendship with Frank Lloyd Wright during that period, (1937-1957) and there is correspondence indicating that she was also writing The Fountainhead at that time. Taliesin is about 75 miles SW of here. She couldn’t afford Wright to design the sets for Fountainhead, but she did explore having him design her a country ‘cottage’ (sic) that was never built.

Unlike Rand’s description of near-mute denizens living in hovels amid squalid ruins, I believe people here are actually quite self-sufficient and will survive what we are experiencing.

I need to reread Atlas Shrugged. It’s been about 10 years since the last re-reading.

They would set hourly wages of up to $22 for fast food workers.

He’s not fooling anybody he just found a way to make a lot of homeless shelters after they shut the doors.

...expect to see their ridicules prices drop significantly.

By then we will be in Zimbabwe territory. There might be one McDonald’s in each urban area served by public transit, but they may or may not be operating, depending on the available electricity.

The burger itself (The New Mac!) will contain less than 10% real meat, if one chooses the ‘with meat’ option, and it will cost a minimum of $100.

...a how-to manual.

Communism never changes, so Rand’s commies are totally recognizable today. She didn’t even have to overplay the *future*....they literally have one tattered playbook and that is all they use.

The *how-to* part, though: that is how Galt’s walkaway, recruitment and the Gulch were portrayed. Dagny tries so hard, expends so much energy and vital force and even then, resists just leaving the world to its own devices. That’s the choice Rand foresaw: leave, spend yourself in fighting or be consumed like the poor wretches who did neither.

I have vague memories of being impressed when, as a child, eating at one of these on a NYCity visit.

Seems like I’ve heard this said as “They pretend to pay me and I pretend to work” before.

If you decide to re-read "Atlas," please buy the guide to the book written by two veteran FReepers. You'll get a whole lot more out of "Atlas."

Who is John Galt?

Just did!!

After re=reading the synopsis, I decided to just buy the Guide. I like your set-up and if I still feel compelled, I will repurchase the book electronically. With prompts, I think I recall large chunks, although they are tainted by the film.

Although, perhaps I should buy the paperback (mine disintegrated) for those lantern-lit nights without electronics that lie ahead.

You're expecting Starnesville.
