An employer told my wife they have people fill out applications for jobs and never show up for interviews. The employer speculates they show applications to the unemployment insurance people to demonstrate they are trying to get a job so they can continue benefits. With generous unemployment benefits and welfare entitlements it is probably better not to work.

"Once they crack Natural Language Understanding, they will have customer service “agents”

I think they are getting close to that now. And voice response units don't need moving parts. I wonder if they will have Indian accents to make them more believable, or if we will actually be able to understand them.

Cut welfare and and cut subsidized housing and cut EBT and you will find more workers.

AND cut "disability'. There a lot of fat lazy white trash collecting "disability". Yes, if you are too fat you can collect "disability". There are drug addicts and alcoholics who collect "disability".

a problem exacerbated by an aging population, low birthrates, and stifled immigration.

She left out the biggest cause: laziness, partially caused by the government paying more in unemployment and welfare than having a job.

And stifled immigration? What is she smoking? Unless she means stifled from countries with strong work ethics.

Yes, they are getting close. Once that happens, lots of jobs will be eliminated. A suprising part of the populations produces nothing but hot air.

They may throw in some with Indian accents just for nostalga sake. Or they will call you by your first name (Mr. Danny).

Once they get really good, they could actually replace teachers. Even better, unlike people, they can actually LEARN what works and what doesn’t and SHARE those observations perfectly with each Bot instance.

I have never seen a business closed due to a lack of labor.

I’m 63 years of age.

I’ve lived on metro DC and a fast growing county in Florida.

From the fairyland of Wall Street, where there can never be too much immigration or enough H-1B visas.

Most corporations prefer electronic training as every important topic can be covered reliably.

Immigration and illegal entry are two different subjects. Demographics is destiny. The worsening labor shortage is old news, was predicted and laid out long ago, like in the early 90’s. Anyone just discovering it (or making fun of it) hasn’t paid attention to what’s been going on.

Low immigration rates of skilled people is a problem. The retiring of tens of millions of Boomers is a problem. Comparatively low birth rates for the last 25 years is a problem. Many of today’s youngsters skip right over the physical labor starter jobs and never work in those fields. Trades are where the employments shortages are cramping output.

Allowing millions of illegal aliens with few skills into the country is a problem, and it requires more skilled workers too, so illegal aliens actually increase the skilled worker shortage because they use the services of skilled people, like medical people for example. They take up space in hospitals and on doctors’ schedules.

People on welfare consume but don’t produce. That’s a double whammy on the producers.

Left unsaid about the number of folks not willing to work is the growing number who can’t work, or do much of anything productive. The bizness guys are just getting around to reporting on the number of covid rebounders who just feel too punky to do anything. That number has apparently passed two million and is growing. And they will qualify both for disability and a damage claim for clotshot damage. Don’t expect the gummint pencil pushers to point out this development.

When I was in high school your choices after graduation were go into the military, get a trade, or go to college.
For 40 years they’ve pumped college into these kids and now want to know where are the Craftsman?
They hire these illegals for pennies and then wonder why a building collapses or the a/c doesn’t work properly.
Well, you get what you pay for!

Lots of boys are wise to this now. This is one reason why there is such an imbalance between the sexes at most colleges. More boys going to trade school and getting useful careers without the crippling debt.

Of course, lots of boys sitting on their asses, playing video games and vaping too. Not everyone will be a winner.

My neighbor does several job fairs for his company. He tells me that as soon as word spreads that they drug test, few come to their table
