The history has to be more complicated than that. There was a big split in the 1960s between Eastern and Western Republicans, but Goldwater pretty much started the Republican Party in Arizona, which had been a Democrat state, so if you were an ordinary, run of the mill Eisenhower Republican you probably voted for him. In later years, old Goldwater and young McCain weren’t so far apart politically. Also it’s been said that old McCain relied on Democrat crossover voters to help him win the GOP primaries.
I cannot watch that ad it was too painful. One of the most disgusting political ads ever made. When it came to Barry Goldwater in your heart you knew he was right.
