As I certified firearm instructor for decades.

Having developed hundreds of shooting drills/scenarios.

I can create one where the student fail or the firearm used fails.

Just by changing the parameters one why or another.
Saying the bear as a 1000 pounder is one of them.
The same with saying it happens to fast is another.

Adding or subtracting to the situation in any why can change the results.

Doing so is solely the whim of the person setting up the scenario.

Warning shots have worked there is a time and place for them.

As with any option one has to decide the if, when and how to use one.

Ak has a fairly simple law when it comes shooting bear in defense of life and property.

A lot of bears are shot each year under it.

The only people who get in trouble are those who lie about it or don’t report it properly.

The story you tell falls well within the law.

The ending you tell seems really strange.

Most people who disparage handguns are those who are not proficient in there use.

I'm retired military and LE, so I'm plenty proficient with firearms, including pistols. A lot of bear attacks in Alaska occur very suddenly and at close range. You might get one shot off with a single action revolver. I'll get a lot more off with my Glock 20. One shot might do the job, but most people aren't proficient enough to get off one perfectly placed shot.

The original law, 5 AAC 92.410, as far as I can find, was signed into law in late 1985. But it’s been busy as changes have been made to it in 1989, 1990, 1994, 2004, and 2009. They can’t seem to make up their minds.

Having been a firearms trainer for decades.

Most LEOs are piss poor shots as are most people in the military.

Having trained both most do not care.

It works out as this 90% having a firearm that is enough for them 7% seem to train some what more 3 percent are the gun guys and experts.

Being in law enforcements or the military or having does not even come close to making one a good shooter.

Personal commitment to being a shooter does.
