Actually (and I’m against mass loan forgiveness), one problem (some would say) about student loan debt is that most people with it DIDN’T graduate. They don’t have their college diplomas. They have huge debt and nothing to show for it. It’s easier to get into college (especially for-profit ones which are very pricey thanks to the availability of student loans) than to complete it.

The problem is that Congress did pass the HEROES Act (during the Iraq War) which states that the Secretary of Education can dissolve student loan debt with any “war” or “emergency.” It passed easily.

Congress at the time didn’t envision something like a 3+ year long covid pandemic “emergency.”

They need to repeal that HEROES Act because this verdict might get overturned on appeal. Now we all know any president can declare anything an emergency and there goes the $500 billion yearly the nation needs from collecting student loan debt to pay for Obamacare (100% direct lending for student loans is what paid for the Affordable Care Act).
