In PA home heating oil is more than twice what it was last year. Over $5/gal now.
I’ve always been conscientious about the heating. Priority is the pipes (since I’ve no children). They freeze more readily than I do. It’s an old house and like most 100+ yo homes, they put the bathroom on the shady side of the house, with no basement underneath because it started out as a back porch :( Take care of those pipes first! Wrap, insulate, or re-route them so they don’t get exposed to drafts because some enterprising critter dug a burrow in there.
Shut the attic door. Open the sink cabinet doors.
Spend most of your time in rooms with a southern exposure and maximize it — keep blinds and drapes open. That goes for every window in the house that offers sunshine.
Dress up. I wear thermals under regular clothes, plus a hoodie indoors if need be.
Space heaters eat money. If you need one you are probably in the wrong room. If you must use one, get a heater that radiates rather than blows hot air around. They blow dollars too.
Drip those faucets. Better a few extra dollars to the water co, than a few hundred extra to the plumber. Adjust the water heater temp downward and stay outta the spa!
If you aren’t totally in love with your house (a problem I have), think seriously about relocating to a more heat-efficient one or even a warmer location.
I’ve still got thermometers in every room with a vulnerable pipe. They help determine, over time, the point at which your pipes start to ruin your day.
Electric blankets are your best friend, second only to Fido.
I may sound like a fanatic but at well under 100lb I’m not a lot thicker than my pipes. To me it’s winter until the end of June.

EIA projects heating a home with natural gas will cost an extra 25% this winter

TOTAL CNN BS!!!!!!!

25% GREATER THAN YESTERDAY, PERHAPS.

In November 2020,(when a hole killed the pipeline) I paid $00.63 per therm total cost all taxes, fees, and charges... included.

Today I pay $2.97 per therm.

Like the lobster in the pot, most have yet to notice.

I wonder what percentage of power plants use COAL to create that power???

IIRC——almost 95% of power east of the MISSISSIPPI River comes from coal.

People in the northeast voted for this. Let them freeze. I feel bad for the good people in the northeast, but a lesson must be learned through pain since data and economic explanations didn’t work.

Natural gas prices in 2022 never reached the 2000 peak, much less the 2005 or 2008 peaks, and that’s without even adjusting for Bidenflation. While it’s wel above the lows of the mid-teens and late 90s, (again without adjusting for inflation, which would make today’s gas look like a better deal). Now, the idiots in Calforian want to ban it as a heading fuel, which will make it even cheaper for the rest of us. And the evironmentalists don’t want to allow pipelines which would allow this cheap, clean energy source to reach many of the yankees that have to depend on trucked in stinky heating oil.

(Price comparisons, Henry Hub).

“As the first frigid weather of autumn chills the Northeast, many people are faced with a tough decision: deal with the surging costs of heating their homes or live without it.”

We have supplied arms and other assistance to countries in open combat with Russia. Something like this used to be called rattling the tiger’s cage. Outside of paying Hunter Biden at Burisma as an unearned board member wage and to launder money here in the US, we have almost no connection to the Ukraine. We shouldn’t have been involved from the start in aggressions and before. We have no business there and never have.

It is a strange situation that defies the data to me. According to the EIA weekly petroleum report for diesel and compared to last year at this same time:

Fuel oil prices have nearly doubled

Diesel prices are up a mere 50 to 69%

Stocks are about 20% below the five year average

Refinery production of distillate is UP about 6%

Imports are down slightly

Exports are up slightly so the net of exports and imports is about 200,000 bbls per day less distillate in the US just ab out offsetting the increase in refinery production.

Demand is just about flat with last year.

Overall: stocks are down, net of production and demand is about flat with last year and YET prices have gone up considerably.

WHY?

Source: https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/weekly/distillate.php

BTW, propane prices are flat or slightly lower compared with last year.

Plus, refrigerators will not chill properly if outside temperature around them drops below high 50s.

I didn't consider that but I have experienced it and you're right. I guess they could open the door and freeze it all. The veggies won't respond well at all. It's going to suck on steroids all winter long and many impacted by it, voted for it.
