Tacked on is:
Merchant function charge
supply charge
Delivery charge
basic service charge
revenue decoupling mech
SBC charge (welfare/low income fund)
Then taxes on top of all these charges at 2.04%
Okay, so the price at the meter is not less than a nickel. I have power from a municipal power company in the next town over. (When the Boston Edison Electrical Illuminating Company was broken up in the 80’s we just happened to fall into their network.) They used to give us that sort of detailed breakdown, now it just number of kWh and charge. The price is still less than 14 cents/kWh.
After all the fees and charges, my electri bill was just over 15 cents a kilowatt. I used 3207 kw and the bill was $492.39
NYSEG is the provider.
1223 kWh for $168.93.
Seeing where I sold/retired from my HVAC business and spend quite a bit of time in eastern Maine, I can assure you that at -12F, you’re definitely not relying on any kind of heat pump. However, those old Vermont Castings wood stoves most likely work pretty good.
FWIW, our place in Maine utilizes two heat pumps for down to about 35 degrees or so, and then an (radiantec.com) indirect heating system via of a propane-fired boiler. We back it all up with a wood pellet stove and a hefty Generac backup generator....just in case. We usually don’t spend the winter up there, but the way things are going in the country right now; the deep, cold, backwoods of Maine is looking better and better.

—”Remember here in NYS we also have on top of per kilowatt:”
Here in Du Page county Il, it is $00.165 per kWh all taxes and fees included.
And going up.
I cannot even fathom how much it would cost for 2.1 jigawatts
NYS was totally “pumping” people getting heat pumps and getting rid of their fossil fuel furnace/boiler. All this Spring, Summer and Fall the cold climate heat pumps were being constantly advertised on television and radio courtesty of ads from New York State as superior to any furnace/boiler.
We both rolled our eyes. They are good for A/C and taking the chill off but even the most advanced “cold climate” heat pump (We have a 2 yr old mitsu and a brand new samsung) simply cannot keep up with the demands of a very cold winter.
Wait until they get their electric bill!
IIRC, National Greed does the same thing. When I had NiMo, there were the actual usage charges, and line charges, and all the other ways that they nickeled and dimed you to death.
The upside of “municipal” electric service is that the cost to run the utility is paid in my property taxes. However, those costs are a little less transparent. My monthly bill reflects the actual usage charges @7 cents per kWh. As best I can tell, we don’t pay the welfare charge.
Since Fairport Municipal Electric is a not for profit operation, there aren’t the other charges. I would have to dig out my taxes from last year to see what the overall cost to run the utility is. I think it’s a flat $150 of my county property tax bill.
I am thinkin wood stoves there.... MC&HNY!!!
It was probably subsidiaries from the feds.🤨
Thanks
