Is the federal food stamp program a help-out, a hand-out or a hold-up?

The rank-and-file staffers of these gubmint agencies are the footsoldiers (and voters) of the left; they are the personification of both the “poverty industry” and the Deep State.

I’ve never known a gubmint worker who didn’t think more of the same were needed to address a problem created by their employer in past decades - and the food stamp program is one of them. We have the fattest “poor” people in the world, and they’re dropping like flies from diabetes.

Funny thing is... The homeless who really might need it are not eligible for SNAP. You have to be part of a “household” to receive it. So if you cannot afford rent and are homeless and forced to live in your car you cannot get SNAP. Can’t get a P.O. box either.

The Food Stamp program is the only wealth transfer program that sends money to the poor. EVERY other federal government program works the other way. Even other anti-poverty programs actually just create work for middle class government employees.

I worked in food stamps for many years. Homeless can and do get food stamps, as well as cash payments. You don’t need an address. Back in the day the ATP ( authorization to purchase) was sent in their name as General Delivery to a designated post office in town. They would then pick up the ATP and bring it to the food stamp office to actually receive their food stamps. We called them GD’s. Since they instituted debit type cards they don’t even have to do that. The cards are just ‘loaded’ on the first of every month. You don’t really think they would leave out the homeless do you?

“You don’t really think they would leave out the homeless do you?”

Yes... As you know then it depends on the state and how they dish it out as Stewards and local regulators.

A more recen current assessment is in order to see the hooks they have put in place that are required to get emergency food assistance, SNAP, And/or financial assistance. First you have to “live somewhere and have a physical/mailing address”.

You have to prove a physical address even if it is a homeless shelter, or housing provided by them. And you have to have mail delivery. And now most Post Offices will not deliver “General Delivery”, it is up to the local Postmaster with no standard policy like it should be.

And you cannot get a P.O. box without out proving a physical address, Rent receipt, power bill, tax bill, Etc. Yes you can use a friend’s physical address for mail, but this drags them into the “Household income” requirement policies just because you happen to get mail there and it isn’t even your physical address. Which makes them not want to help with a mailing address.

Yes... They will give you housing assistance if you are homeless, but you have to be in this housing program first, or be residing at a shelter before you can get SNAP on a regular basis. And in many States you also have to have a job.

It is not at all friendly for someone who is forced to live “independently in their car”... If you cannot prove a physical address with a rent receipt or power bill in your name, documentation from a physical shelter address, or be signed up with their housing assistance you are not getting any help from them.

Now the only reason I personally point out this issue is because it is not going to be very long before there are a whole lot of folks being forced to live in their cars... And this situation is going to be a huge problem for them to survive. They will be excluded from assistance because of the policy hooks.

The Federal Food Stamp program is to subsidize the suppliers, not the recipients.

I AGREE FULLY.

Schools & Welfare are NOT double checking the meals kids are getting at school.

Of course they aren’t. Schools get government benefits the more of their student body that is on the free/reduced lunch program.

But the sad reality is, in far too many cases, most of the food the food-stamp kids eat is what they get at school. Their parents are involved in trading in the SNAP allotment for cash in order to buy the things that are important to them. The kids are in effect ‘double dipping’ but I can’t blame them, they deserve to eat; it’s not their fault their parents use food benefits meant for them for other things.

Once I was so broke that I had to pawn things for food money, just to feed my kids. At other times, I penny-pinched to afford groceries.

The thought of applying for food stamps never occurred to me.

About a year ago, I looked up the income levels for food stamps, just to see what they are. Turns out, households with higher incomes than mine are eligible.

But, I’d never want to take that road. It’s a trap.

Congratulations on your achievements. Government social programs sometimes work like traps that are very difficult to escape.

Please go back and read my previous reply, let the points I made sink in well, and then again read the sources you shared.

Your sources prove the points I made about how someone living completely homeless or homeless in their car independently is ineligible for SNAP unless they first become dependent on a third party.
