No the Russians did not send millions into battle without weapons. And they didn’t shoot everyone who retreated. There were instances where some of those things happened early in the war, but it has been wildly exaggerated. Before long the Soviets were producing so many weapons that the Germans armed themselves with Soviet weapons.

And blocking units mostly just stopped soldiers from retreating and reorganized them and sent them back to the front. Shooting them would have been worse than stupid.

Most of the books on the eastern front were written by German Generals who had a vested interest in covering their own @$$es.
