I remember at the time reading that line from the New York Times editorial board how it shook me to my core (as someone who in an earlier life pursued a career in journalism).
Those words should echo in everyone’s ears every time they read anything political or cultural from “the paper of record “.
The underlying premise is that if can prohibit speech and ideas that the establishment doesn’t like, that will stop people from believing them.
