And yet, we WERE one big happy American-loving family just a few decades ago.

We worked (everyone wanted a job and couldn’t wait for their first one, no matter if it was a grunt job). We looked forward to our first car, and our first apartment. We gratefully accepted grandma’s old cookware and a few of Mom’s old dishes to stock our kitchen. And, we treasured that recipe book or box they gifted us so we could prepare our first meal in our new place to their standards.

We took relatives’ cast off furniture and curtains to furnish the living room and many times our first bed was a mattress on the floor.

We were polite and helpful to others, whether we knew them personally or not. We worked hard to do our best in school and were proud of our achievements, especially if we were only one of those few that received an award recognizing our work. If we didn’t receive an award, we swore to do better next time and congratulated those that worked hard enough to achieve more than we did.

We took our father’s advice, and put a few cents or a dollar in a jar each week in case we needed it in an emergency later. We learned to check the oil in our car, and keep an eye on the gas gauge, and have a bit of change in the glove compartment for a phone call in case we needed assistance.

We found a Church or community organization with like minded people and made connections with new friends that lasted until death. We volunteered to work to help those in need so they didn’t need to go on the government “dole”. We helped them get back on their feet and used our connections to find them a job that met their skills.

THOSE are American values!
