Gee what a surprise. There are consequences to importing Jihads.
I have agree with your last post - and imagine how the world would have changed if the first nuke obliterated Suribachi, first shot. There would have survivors on Iwo but the Japanese leadership would likely have received a very descriptive report from Kuribayashi and they would not be able to deny the power of that weapon. Maybe the war would have ended without having to use them on civilians.
I knew a few Iwo vets during my career and one of them was our battalion Sergeant Major in Vietnam. He said that he had just landed and he saw a huge object the size of big trash can soaring above them and it fell behind him. He woke on the hospital ship with an wounded back and was out of the battle.
After I retired from the Corps, I led a design team that built a robotic artillery weapon. Damn thing was fast, sure and very deadly. A first step towards bringing our guys home whole while convincing the enemy to “see it our way”.
One can only hope.
The final death toll among Marines was 5,931 killed in action, died of wounds or missing in action and presumed dead — more than twice as many Marines than had been killed in all of World War One. An additional 209 deaths occurred among the Navy corpsmen and surgeons assigned to the Marines.

Imagine this final day of the 78th February since Iwo how many children, grand children and great grandchildren of these 6,140 Marines would be alive on this earth today.
My guess would be somewhere between 12 and 20 thousand.
Again, Nimitz did what he felt he had to do. But, the stark gravity of the facts above can’t help but make a thinking man wonder.
Some of what we end up with left over are less-than-optimal men who may have dodged dangerous duty or had some sort of limitations.
We have ended up with a couple of generations of gradually declining manhood, in the classic sense - and that could explain the '60s and '70s and today's "men" wanting to pretend that they are women.
You may note a slight tinge of bitterness.
..........well stated!
Couldn’t agree more!
