"So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high water mark — that place where the wave finally broke, and rolled back.”

Keep in mind, Frank, that Vegas trip for HST included a Lincoln Continental (with overinflated tires) car trunk full of weed, hash, cocaine, ibogaine, adrenochrome, uppers, downers, amyls, nitrous oxide, Chivas Regal, Bombay Gin, Chartreuse, and cartons of Dunhills.

Those were the days.

Not for me but I observed others.

“”Actually the details don’t matter to me. He’s dead now and I was never close to him. I would have liked to get ahold of his passport/birth certificate however because I’m entitled to UK citizenship and need some documents to offer as proof of his birth over there. But the UK has since gone so far downhill in recent years I’ve kind of lost interest in pursuing that too.””

Looking at your posts on this thread and the way you think about everyone and everything, you are just a dark, negative person, full of self-pity and self-indulgent weakness with no real interest in anything outside of yourself.

LOL what are you a psychiatrist or something? I certainly don’t have any self pity though you would be correct about me being overly cynical about things. If you came from the background and experienced the same things I did you’d probably be just as cynical. I just think I see reality the way it is without the sugar coating so many seem to rely on. I just consider myself very grounded what the kids today call being based. Perhaps I come off as somewhat dour on here but in real life I just tend to joke around and make fun of all the idiocy we have in the world today.

I could share a lot of your childhood experience, you are a self-made man, your childhood did not make you like you are, and it isn’t very pretty.

Well certainly the details matter enough for you to expound on them at length very publicly on the internet. Are you sure the details don't matter, or maybe you just don't want to know the real story?

Well I don’t know I mean what does it really matter at this point? I have many other things on my mind and have to be selective on how I spend my time and efforts. Researching my old man’s military history isn’t exactly at the top of my agenda.

Well you are entitled to take any perspective you want and I’m free to do the same so we’ll just have to agree to disagree on certain matters. And what do you mean I’m not pretty? All the girlies say I’m pretty fly for a white guy lol.

“America’s involvement in the Vietnam War simply wasn’t long enough for multiple generations of soldiers to have fought in it.”

It’s possible, we were there a long time. The main American combat forces didn’t arrive until January 1965 but we had already been there a decade.

My kindergarten teacher’s Army captain husband was one of the first in Vietnam, that was 1955-56.

My father was one of 16,000 US personnel there 1962-63

I was in the draft lottery in 1969 and the war was still going on.

It’s possible, we were there a long time.

Of course, it's possible.

I admit that I was attempting to provoke jimwatx a little, trying to goad him into providing hard, forensic-level info.

Whenever anyone here at Free Republic makes bold statements about sensitive subjects ("My daddy fought in Vietnam, and I was almost drafted to go fight in Vietnam!"), they should be expected to simultaneously provide robust data to back it up - data that will stand up to "nit-picking."

Either that, or keep quiet about it (advisable when, e.g., one's claim is based only upon vague, subjective, or half-remembered family lore à la "My grandmammy had high cheekbones, and was thus an Indian princess!").

We now live in the Internet Age: Anyone wishing to research his father's vital statistics (jimwatx seems unsure as to when his father was actually born, when exactly he married, when he served, etc.), military records, date of death, etc. The online resources at one's command are awesome.

Alternatively, those not willing or unable to utilize these resources should therefore keep their traps shut.

I not saying that the assertions advanced here by jimwatx rise to the level of "Stolen Valor," but they contribute little to the discussion at hand and are hence somewhat distracting.

I should know: My daddy (a Secret Service Agent who was in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963 - or maybe he was on the detail protecting Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981, and wrestled Hinckley to the ground - our family lore on this topic is a little confusing) always said: "Don't let your mouth write any checks that your butt can't cash!"

Regards,

So now it’s stolen valor? LMAO some of you nutjobs on here crack me up. The only reason I even mentioned it was because some of the vets on here like ansell who post on the Ukraine threads were always talking about their service and some of them seemed to think that because I was antiwar (unless it was defensive) I must be some hippy peacenik who had no family connection to the military or somehow disrespected their service. So I just mentioned my father’s service to sort of set the record straight. Both of my grandfathers served in WW2 an uncle served in the Coast Guard for that matter. I never even knew the storied history of the 101st until well into adulthood I just assumed it was another branch of the army. Actually my father himself never specifically mentioned he was in the 101st I guess he just assumed I was aware of it because my mother was with him during training at Fort Campbell. Looking back and trying to sort things out I’m pretty sure now that he must have reenlisted. Like I said he was one of those super patriotic guys so I wouldn’t be surprised. Anyway he’s DEAD now so this is so this is just water under the bridge at this point. It’s kind of amusing that so many on here seem way more interested in his military history than I do.

And I wasn’t particularly worried that I’d be drafted I was born in ‘56 so while they did put my birthday in the last draft lottery they had already quit deploying troops over there and everyone knew the war was coming to an end. Besides I was still under the assumption that I would have had a college deferment anyway though somebody said that was done away with in ‘71. I’m not here to take credit for my father’s service nor am I inclined to brag about the fact that he was in the 101st since I didn’t even like the man. I was merely noting the fact that I had a number of relatives who have themselves served. I give credit and respect to anyone who served no matter which branch of the military they served in.

I don’t drink and it’s too early for weed I’m still working on coffee. I’m not angry either rather just amazed that some on here are making such a big deal over this. I swear some of you need to get a life.
