One of Jimmy Hendrix’s last performances in 1970 there, played in front of over 600,000 people and closed the festival.

They’d been dating just two months when they went to Woodstock on a lark. They were married 54 years. How awesome is that!

RIP Bobbi Kelly Ercoline.

And his Star Spangled Banner was not a protest against the Vietnam War, as leftists want to believe. In real life, Jimi was a big-time Anti-Communist.

RE: Didn’t he die like two years later? (Singer Bob Hite).

“On April 5, 1981, during a break between sets at The Palomino Club in North Hollywood, Hite was handed a vial of heroin by a fan. He snorted it and fell into a coma, after which others unsuccessfully attempted to revive him with a large dose of cocaine.”

He, like John Mayall, was a true blues collector with hundreds of 78s and 45s of incredibly rare gems. Kept the blues alive for millions like me. Everyone in Canned Heat was the real deal and sincere.

Note: Al Blind Owl Wilson of the group killed himself and was found lying on the lawn behind Bob Hite’s house. He had been deeply depressed that no one but a handful of people cared about the earth, the ecology and climate problems. A friend said all he had to do was wait for the tsunami of mass interest in his obsession.

Excellent lead guitarist Henry The Sunflower Vestine took increasing amounts of LSD and finally couldn’t get out of bed to play the historic Woodstock concert. Earlier he had stumbled and passed out during songs at other venues.

An audience member professional guitarist Harvey Mandel had seen so many performances that Bob Hite convinced him to get a few minutes crash course on the chords and get up and play with the group. An amazing performance.

my father was crawling around the jungles of vietnam getting shot at while these @#@#$@# hippies sat around on their lazy a55es taking drugs and defiling all that was good and true about American society.

We can argue about the wisdom of engaging in the Vietnam war, but I think there is no disputing it was a turning point in modern America where it became obvious leftists, progressives and elites could dodge a top-down, Fed.gov mandated sacrifice, while the rest of America served or suffered for it.

It seems to have set an attitude and pattern for many political crisis, wars and events afterwards. Today that pattern is set-in-stone in Washington DC

Yeah not a good idea to use Hells Angels for concert security. Not cool to flash a gun at these events either as the victim did.

The Left basically pinned Vietnam on Nixon, it was as if JFK and LBJ never existed.

If the children of the elites could be drafted into wars, I guarantee we would have a lot less wars. A far as the draft goes, I don’t think it would go over any better today than it did back then.

Best moment at Woodstock was Pete Townshend almost beheading Abbie Hoffman with his guitar.

You guys know that 70% of those killed in Vietnam were volunteers right?

"my father was crawling around the jungles of vietnam getting shot at while..."

My brother was crawling around the jungles of Vietnam, getting shot at in '66-'67. Draft-dodging Bill Clinton spent a week in Moscow in 1969 when he was a student at Oxford. Here he was visiting the country we were fighting a proxy war with. Made my blood boil when I learned about that.

Those damn hippies nowadays are the most conservative age bracket.

“I will point out that the International Pop Festival in Atlanta in 1969 and 1970 were bigger and had none of the problems Woodstock had. Woodstock was terribly run and organized and they lost out on a lot of ticket revenue because they ended up letting anyone in. Of course they made money on the film and records sold but I am not sure how much the promoters really got on that end of it.”

___

During those years, and into the early 80’s Atlanta had some great concerts! Very little trouble at all with minor security presence. Frank Zappa, Grateful Dead, and many other bands played at the Fox Theater. Also, Elvis played there at least once or twice in the late 50s.

Soon, all that fun without a lot of crime came to a screeching halt. The last Republican mayor of Atlanta left after 1982. I think that was the year Andrew Young was elected and there hasn’t been a GOP mayor since. You can track the downfall of that once great city since then.

There is a certain segment of society now that will not allow us to have such nice times!

“So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high water mark — that place where the wave finally broke, and rolled back.””

I’ve read that passage a few times in the past. It is now so poignant to read and see what he saw at that time.

I don’t have to imagine, it was called the Altamont raceway free concert just a few months later. I suppose you’re correct though, in the sense that 60’s “hippies” were (mostly) kids caught up in a popular culture fashion statement and fairly conservative by today’s standards, downright troglodytes. Mission accomplished, I guess.

It’s interesting to me that the long hair and goofy clothes was more or less a uniform, with everything that entails.
