Volkswagen unveiled a cheap new electric concept car, but protectionist policies mean it's not worthwhile for the company to introduce it in the U.S.

It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

Agree that the new EV tax credit rules (changed in the Inflation Raising Act) are very much a factor in limiting supply of cheap EV's. Also there's the existence of the EV tax credit itself: artificially inflating the price of any EV it applies to. Just like everything else the government subsidizes. Government, quit "helping"!
However, I don't cry any tears for Volkswagen. Our car tariffs and such are child's play compared to Germany's protectionist car policies. This is where I, who likes free trade, agree with Trump on. Don't call it "free trade" if we drop our tariffs and limitations but the other country doesn't. We can win most any trade war because they usually need us more than we need them. Of course, the EV regulations aren't about getting Germany to drop their import tariffs and such. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

So there is a silver lining.

Tariffs are fine. The EU is welcome to drop their tariffs.

my first car, a 1994 explorer, full limited trim, per its build order, was 25k off the line. found the paperwork under the carpet when I got it in 2014.
my barebones base stick shift 94 ranger was MSRP 12k.

I bet you VW won’t bring it here because it won’t meet the NTHSA Crash ratings.
Most foreign cars won’t meet that or the emissions.

If that car also insulates its owner from having to worry about fluctuations in the global oil market, even better. Another of the great lies of the green/EV promoters
Will your EV protect you from rising electricity prices?
Since baseload demand (and renewable back-up demand) for electricity is increasingly natural gas, you won't get "fluctuating" electricity costs - you'll only get RISING electricity costs.
