That is exactly the way you should handle this! If the ETs turn out to real and just a remote civilization, no harm done. If they turn out to be demonic, no harm done.

People have, on the other hand, committed suicide when faced with idea of ETs. It happened when War Of The Worlds was aired, and it happens when service members clean up an ET crash.
