...reality is conservative (i.e., we live in a coherent, morally ordered universe). As a result, writers and filmmakers who want to be honest storytellers may consider themselves personally liberal -- and given the film industry's bias, that's the protective coloration many take on as a near-necessity -- but they will often produce surprisingly conservative work because truth will out.

Brilliant observation!

Sometimes I’m afraid of sounding like a broken record, but as you know — since you’ve been on the movie ping list from the beginning — finding and calling attention to conservative content in current films is the main reason I started the list.

There are a lot of movie threads on FR. If we nuked Hollywood as often as freepers demand, not even the cockroaches would survive. But that’s shooting fish in a barrel. I always appreciate threads celebrating good films — or at least fair films, that give both sides their due regardless of how the filmmakers steer the ending — especially if they are recent. If we want more of “our kind of movies” made, we should be supporting them when they appear.

They don’t need to be conservative agitprop films; those are outnumbered 100-1 or more by left wing agitprop films, and a pox on all of them. But if storytellers are intelligent and honest, if they tell serious stories with serious characters who face real dilemmas and hard choices with real costs, conservative themes will at least have room to breathe.

The filmmakers may be a pack of left wing loons, but if they tell honest stories and don’t cheat, we’ll get our innings. And sometimes we just need more and better conservative critics and reviewers who are capable of drawing out half-buried themes. If you see a target of opportunity, let me know. I’m always happy to loop in the movie ping list.

I will keep my ear to the ground for acceptable film fare; but I despair. These days I mostly watch whatever a friend with streaming services wants to watch rather than fork out and be horrified at how terrible a new film is. The Sopranos movie disappointed me so badly, it was literally shocking how bad it was.

I did enjoy Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis most recently.

I miss the joy of being able to go to the movies without being grossed out. When I look at the lists of Oscar winners from the 40s through 90s, I had seen more than half of them all, whether in the theater or on TCM, etc. But now it’s a rare thing even to want to go sit through another manufactured racially or sexually correct episode crowbarred awkwardly into a movie to check the boxes.
