Essentially, a .270 or .30-06 just as good for hunting Alaska big game as the magnum rifle calibers. Bullet selection is important. Shot placement is much more important than caliber.
And you believe this Fed agency for what reason? Biggest hollow point caliber you can shoot along with a magazine that holds multiple cartridges.
If’n I’m after Grizzled B’ar I’m rocking a crew-served weapon on a tracked vehicle.
It can be helpful to have something to kill big bears, just in case, but even then, hollow points are not preferred. .
You know not of what you speak. This article addresses wild game hunting in Alaska, not self defense in the urban jungle.
The Alaska Fish and Game Department is a Fed agency? Brandon & Co have extended their reach farther than I realized. Things are worse than we know.
It is the State of Alaska Fish and Game. They have considerable experience with big game in Alaska. It is not a federal agency.
As a fried of mine used to say:
Shot placement is King.
Adequate penetration is Queen.
All else are angels dancing on the head of a pin.
Well said!
Of course not everyone can be Karamojo Bell.
Many of the records that have stood for the longest were animals taken with the Krag 30-40.
Considerably above the .30-30.
Absolutely correct. A master of the rifle.
Also, he understood Elephant anatomy extremely well. The first elephant he killed, he cut the skull in half, so he knew where the brain was in that very large head.
Of similar concern, most people misunderstand where a bear's brain is located.
I’ll reserve judgment until Dr. Fauci rules on what caliber is “safe and effective”.
He "walked" the shot in by watching the dirt he kicked up. When asked about shot placement, he said, you only need to break one leg.
Urban jungle? Mandeville Louisiana is a FAR CRY from any jungle except the hell hole of new orleans which is separated by a big lake...so please never assume you know who posts what and where they reside or what they may know.
“Wandering of an Elephant Hunter” isn’t particularly great reading, but interesting.
We had a juvenile bear get into our property a week ago, enjoyed our decorative pond and giant bird feeder. Tried scaring him off, but bear don’t care. Finally popped him in his fuzzy butt with a .22 shot shell out of the Winchester 67 I keep in my office. At 20 yards I doubt it did more than sting him. He took of for other parts, which is good as we have small children on our street.
What is a "hollow point caliber"? Big game bullets are not hollow points.
Two Australia relate topics. The Great Emu War, vickers guns and all which the Emu’s seemed to win, and an extreme long range shooter on a YouTube channel “Mark and Sam After Work”.
