agree to withdraw if and when their paths to the nomination are effectively closed,” he added.

So Mitt wants ALL the candidates, except Trump to drop out?

“Donald Trump’s apparent inevitability”

I’m glad Mitt has come to his senses and embraced Trumpnevitability.

“they probably all figure they have a shot at the convention if Trump is in jail”

That’s only a possibility if Trump doesn’t sew up the nomination before the convention, which, by all appearances, he will probably do quite easily.

Ramaswamy was born in the US, so he is a natural-born citizen.

No it doesn’t. His parents weren’t naturalized citizens at his birth. He’s a statutory citizen but not a natural born Citizen. They are not the same.

How about Mitt the $#*+ set an example by announcing he won't run for reelection?

If he’s in jail by the time of convention acceptance, it’s quite likely they’ll pick someone else. There’s no law that says a political party can’t nominate someone else last minute even if Trump has the delegates. There was some debate as to whether this would happen in 2016 without any looming criminal trials.

“If he’s in jail by the time of convention acceptance, it’s quite likely they’ll pick someone else.”

I don’t think Trump’s delegates are very likely to do that.

“There’s no law that says a political party can’t nominate someone else last minute even if Trump has the delegates.”

There’s also no law that says anyone is required to vote for the Republican’s candidate if they override the will of the votes like that.

It depends on how many delegates he has and how many everyone else has. Maybe there’s even some rule that he has to be there to accept the nomination, I’m not sure. It would be absolutely bonkers to nominate a guy who couldn’t even campaign, and I expect many of them would flip.

“It would be absolutely bonkers to nominate a guy who couldn’t even campaign...”

I say it would be absolutely bonkers to allow the Democrats to use the force of the courts to pick your candidate for you.

They’re doing that right now by goosing his numbers with lawsuits they could have brought 2 years ago, the timing of which you presumably think is completely accidental.

Now you’re making a self-contradictory argument.

Either you can argue the Republicans won’t nominate Trump if he in jail, or you can argue that the Democrats are “picking our candidate” by boosting Trump with all these lawsuits and indictments. You can’t argue both at the same time, because they contradict each other.

It’s not contradictory at all. If these lawsuits never happened and DeSantis were to win the delegate race outright, there is no dispute about anything.

However, if D’s are successful in using these suits to boost Trump to a majority delegate haul and then throw him in jail before the convention, there will be many who insist at the convention that he should be able to run for office from prison and then pardon himself out of jail on inauguration day while others like me who say that’s insane and we should pick someone else. It would fracture the party and cause maximum chaos, which is the point.

The reality is though they can do more damage putting him in jail after the convention and his name is locked on the ballot: an incumbent vs a guy behind bars is exactly the kind of race they want.

“It would fracture the party and cause maximum chaos, which is the point.”

But that’s not what you argued. You argued they were “picking our candidate”, not that they were “trying to fracture the party”.

Either way, it’s a silly argument, since it is the base of the Republican party that wants Trump to be the candidate, and that is what is most relevant.

Yes, they are picking our candidate. I said they probably wouldn’t lock him away until after the convention but before election day. With courts and juries, they’re not in complete control of the calendar, but they have some idea of the timing of these things.

Why do you think they gave their mortal enemy 2 extra years of freedom in his late 70’s when they could have brought most of these suits in 2021? Hint: it wasn’t because of their benevolence.
