There's no real contradiction. The US military has not fought for "the country" since (at least) the end of the Cold War.
They fight to keep the world profitable for the bipartisan orgy of mass murder crowd. And will fight against you and yours if ordered. Not your military (except you pay for it).
So the ideological prep they are getting at West Point is definitely on topic.
The old free USA I loved is gone for good.
