Indeed, the neighbors would not have been able to do anything to help, but some may still wonder, as this case haunts them. Many of us have encountered situations where we’ve wondered, “What if...?” In reality, there was nothing we could have done, but we’ll always think about it. As you pointed out, the whole community is traumatized, even if they didn’t know the family.

I hear you. People used to communicate with neighbors much more. Since everybody is so isolated in their own little world, a trauma like this is even more devastating, because it came as a total surprise.

Back in my childhood, everybody knew what was going on in the neighborhood.
