When we moved to N Texas in ‘78 the house we bought had all electric heat. A $600/month electric bill during Winter was common. I decided to upgrade my system to a Heat Pump/Propane Furnace combo. Been very happy with the results of that move.

ABSOLUTELY NO SYMPATHY HERE - they voted for that SOB, and now they must live with the consequences!

And I hope it is a brutal winter!

Imagine if Cuomo “allowed” for (didn’t stop) fracking in the Southern Tier and made a deal for NY’rs for some cheap gas. Bills would be reduced by 30-40%, instead of this crap.

What the proponents of energy efficient heat pumps don’t mention is that once the temp drops into the teens, the heat pump doesn’t pump, it relies upon heat strips, ie, all electric heat. Heat strips are not efficient. BTW, I’ve got electicity for a/c that used NG for heat.

Couple that with eco nazi mandatory shutdowns of ordinary power generators and lack of sufficient replacement on the green energy side means they will be paying a fortune and still freeze their ass off.

Standard heat pumps stop working well at about 40 degrees, the mini splits can go about 20 degrees cooler.

Electric was tried for homes on Long Island back in the 70s. The monthly bills were enormous even back then.

So they’re going to burn more gas on the front end, to negate burning gas on the back end.
Genius…

From a Thermodynamics standpoint, the highest quality power is electricity or a spinning shaft. Using electricity to make low-grade heat via electric resistance is about the dumbest thing you can do, Thermodynamically.

Electric heating is much less efficient than gas. But don’t expect facts and logic from these cultists.

This isn't about "green" energy. It's about the harsh reality that these areas can't afford to replace the aged gas line infrastructure. We have long been regressing into third world status. Many parts of the country are already there.

The politicians pretend it's about "green" energy to hide the truth about the decayed gas mains because they don't want the bond ratings to fall even further.

Interesting. I didn’t think about that.

“once the temp drops into the teens, the heat pump doesn’t pump, it relies upon heat strips, ie, all electric heat.”

True but there are other options besides electric heat and that’s why we have a propane furnaces as a backup. A heat pump in the Northern US is not practical but the Greeniacs want to force all people to use electric heat and the result is as the article points out. Very expensive.

It’s worse then that, they are going to burn gas, loose energy in burning, converting into another energy form, transmit to retail customers who will pay more for less energy. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

—”Electric heating is much less efficient than gas. “

Not true, but the answer is a moving target and somewhat technical.

Here in northern Illinois the price of delivered gas/electricity constantly changes.

For electric resistance heat the efficiency does not change, but the efficiency of a heat pump changes with the outside temperature called the coefficient of performance (COP).

For the heat pump my wife and I installed last year @40F the COP is 4:1 (four times ERH) at MINUS 15F, it drops to 1:1 (same as resistance heat)... around -20F electric resistance is MORE efficient than my heat pump.

Around 20F we switch to a 94% efficient GAS boiler.
depends on the price of energy, last we used the HP most of the winter.

Our furnace got tagged when it was 10-20 but luckily we had a heat pump. Kept our house around 40 and supplemented with our fireplace until they could install a new furnace a couple days later.

Back in the 1980s that was true for some low-end HPs.

See reply #37.

Simply check the COP of the heat pump at the temperature in question.

TRUE, please explain the coefficient of performance (COP) of a heat pump, air-air, and water-air????
