He enlisted in the Navy.
Try as he might to get a shipboard assignment he spent the war in The Shore Patrol.
First at The Brooklyn Navy Yard and then Long Beach California.
Guess in the end he was lucky. Another one of my uncles was a gunners mate on the U.S.S. Santa Fe.
He made it home but barely. He was killed in a construction accident some years after the war. Left my aunt a widow with four young boys to raise.
Strange how life works out sometimes.
Teachers said “how disappointed” they were with my decision.
Now they have a military honor roll for those who served. I have never gone to a reunion. I live in Texas, not going to travel 1500 miles for a 6 hour event.
I’d probably turn it into an FU session anyway. I got the best end of that scholarship, I graduated with no student debt, lived in Germany for four years, had a variety of leadership roles, and met my wife at Fort Bliss.
Lol, I had an uncle who was demanding as hell, never minced his words. “I always thought of you as another snotty kid, but no more. I see a man standing before me today!”
