George Orwell, 1984: “Heavy physical work, care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer and above all gambling, filled the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult.”.
With the decline in need for “heavy physical work” and the loss of national commitment to home and children, we’ve moved through even that sad vision, and on into the void.
You can play people billions of dollars to play a game when your venues are subsidized by the taxpayers.
I hate this. Here in the DC metro area, Virginia and DC are in a bidding war over the location of the Wizards (née Bullets) and the Capitals. Mayor Bowser came up with $500 million to refurbish the Capital One Arena, but can’t find any money for things like the subway system and other infrastructure projects. On this side of the Potomac River, the governor wants to spend $1 billion on a sports and retail center accessible by small, congested streets and one subway station.
It’s all madness.
Abe Pollin built it with his private funds. He was a great owner.
Now all the owners have no conscience and they think it's okay to "steal" from tax-paying citizens.
That's the way it should be, billionaire owners should take out loans and have them paid off in 10-20 years with profits from the new stadium.
