I don’t understand this political obsession with “proportional response”.
If someone commits an act of war on you, engage them until they are defeated.
After Pearl Harbor, were we satisfied we just sinking a few Japanese warships?

"Proportionate response" is a strategy for losers.
If we need people to be in a war zone, we must have them use winning strategies and tactics. Some version of "massive overreaction" is what winners do. We could call that "proportional response" if we want to do misdirection propaganda that makes us look all warm and fuzzy. But we should not be all warm and fuzzy.
Otherwise, we should not have people in a war zone.
