BJ, you need to do more reading outside the establishment syllabus. Most importantly the Beards, but do pick up Jim Webb's little book. Unless you've got a reading impediment, you can finish it in one evening. He's an engaging writer. You might want to move on to his novels about Vietnam and its' aftermath as well. One United States Senator who wasn't an idiot. And a Democrat truth-teller I might even have supported for President.

Another eyeopener would be Thom DeLorenzo's The Real Lincoln.

As interesting a read that Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America might be, I’m not sure why I would need to read that to simply find out why that group would care one way or another about the election of Lincoln. I asked you a question what that group would care about the election of Lincoln. I believe you said they didn’t like oppression in your first reply. I’m just not sure what Lincoln would have done or what they imagined he might have done to them.

I have read Shelby Foote’s 3 volume narrative on the civil war many times. Would you consider that to be the establishment narrative?
