I am reminded of how in the 1860 election, several Southern states did not put Abraham Lincoln’s name on the ballot.

You can, but in many (most?), states write-ins are tossed aside, never to be counted, or even looked at. They’re handled as spoiled.
Imagine the look in her eye and the sound of her voice if your trash can got six inches over on her side of the curb.
