A colonoscopy is an examination that can and often does involve the surgical removal of polyps or abnormal tissue, or the taking of tissue biopsies. It also most often is performed under general anaesthesia. Austin possibly could have had polyps or other tissue removed, or his large intestine might have been perforated by one of the instruments used in the procedure.
